Pure, Simple Ingredients
Whole wheat is not genetically engineered.
There's a lot of talk these days about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisims) or genetically engineered varieties (GE) and with all the different opinions, it's hard to know what is factual.

Plants have been cultivated for ages using natural breeding techniques, but in the late 1980s, scientists started experimenting with alterations of plant DNA to make them more disease resistant, among other benefits.

Canola, corn, cotton, soy, papaya, sugar beets, zucchini and summer squash are currently the most commonly GE products.

So what does this mean for wheat?

From 1998 through 2005, field testing of GE wheat was approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, due to the resistance of American wheat farmers, the program was stopped.

According to the (USDA), there are no commercially available wheat, rye, barley, amaranth, sorghum, teff, durum, quinoa, buckwheat, caraway, sesame seed, sunflower seed, cinnamon, chia, garbanzo, bulgar, oats, poppy and millet GE varieties in production.

That's good news for those of us looking to enjoy the nutritional benefit of whole grains!
